Our client wanted RDA to fulfil a simple aspiration, to create the largest room possible at the back of a standard Victorian terrace house, but with two constraints; that there should be no planning delay and roof glazing only when absolutely necessary.
At ground floor, the rear wall of the main house was removed, the base of the existing two-storey rear extension completely cleared, and a new sloped ‘box’ added beside it extending the full length of the extension and beyond. Light enters the new room from two sources: through full width sliding doors to the garden; and more importantly through a gap between the new box and the main rear wall of the house. This brings light deep into the plan of the room and into the remodelled spaces in the rear of the main house. Externally, the extension is a simple extrusion of timber construction, clad in man-made slate panels, with the frameless glazed gap set flush to them both horizontally and vertically.
